The effective learning of a language takes consistency, structure, time, and ideally a group to do it with. Language is for communication, so learning it by oneself in front of a computer is not going to be as effective as sharing our experience with
  1. other learners, and
  2. native or near-native speakers.



Language is a uniquely human attribute, and we use it for communicating with one another. It's always an excellent idea to get a self-study plan for when planning a vacation to the native country, and show basic appreciation for their culture, but if you want to give your children a solid exposure to other languages and cultures (which adds perspective and analytical ability to their thinking), the best solution is to provide them with a solid language experience in a fully structured program.

Computer programs, even the most popular ones like "Rossetta Stone" are “static”. The power of real-life improvisation is missing, because there are only so many interactions programmed for practice. These computer CD's are excellent as a supplement, but very limited for substantial learning.

There are other options like internet resources, with thousands of pages that offer interesting activities. However they are in “bits and pieces” that are very difficult to put together as a cohesive and solid Spanish program. While these are good for support and extra practice, an integrated program is needed to enjoy the full range of effective benefits.
